Scope and Contents
The Airbrush, Acrylic, and Acetylene Oral History Project contains three oral histories with three Charleston-area artists: Halim Abdul-Karim (jewelry designer), Elayna Shakur (visual artist), and Jafar Simmons (airbrush artist). The interviewees discuss their artistic practices, what brought them to the Charleston-area, why they decided to stay, and how they Lowcountry has impacted their artistic practices. The oral history project was conducted by Alada Shinault-Small in 1999.
The oral histories are arranged alphabetically by last name at the file-level; more information about the contents of each interview can be found in the abstract for each interview. The collection also contains a brief synopsis of the project written by Alada as well as photograph negatives and corresponding description of the artists.

Abstract
Elayna Shakur discusses moving her to Charleston, her work doing portrait therapy, how living in the Lowcountry has impacted her artistic practice, her work with other artists, and her community in the area.
The oral history is conducted by Alada Shinault-Small at her home in Folly Beach, South Carolina.
