McLeod Plantation , 2004 - 2011

 File — Box: 1, Folder: 7

Scope

Located on James Island, South Carolina, the McLeod Plantation is a Gullah heritage site preserved in recognition of its cultural and historical significance to African diaspora. In 2011, the Historic Charleston Foundation sold McLeod Plantation to the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission, thereby ensuring the buildings would be restored and protected under public ownership. This folder contains correspondence, newspaper clippings, memos, and legislative records describing the potential purchase of the McLeod Plantation by the College of Charleston. This proposal was met with opposition from board members of the AIAAHC, college faculty, and local Charlestonians.
