This series contains images of Charleston and Lowcountry figures, including Septima Poinsette Clark, Benjamin Cox, Mary Moultrie, the Jenkins family, Tobias Gadson, Sr., Harvey Gantt, Jonathan Green, the Harleston family, Daniel A. Payne, Bill Saunders, Philip Simmons, Modjeska Simpkins, and Judge J. Waites Waring. Alumni of the Avery Normal Institute and the Avery Institute and staff and supporters of the Avery Research Center are heavily represented. Images of nationally-known celebrities such as Jackie Robinson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and Oprah Winfrey are also included.
