Alvena Margaret Cooke was born in Dorchester County on June 15, 1913, to Harry Michael Cooke and Mary Richardson Cooke. Cooke received her nursing training at Cannon Street Hospital and Training School in Charleston under the direction of Dr. Seabrook and Mrs. Mabel Oliver. She graduated in 1934 and worked primarily as a public health nurse. She retired from nursing in 1978. The Friendly Moralist Society was a benevolent society, established in Charleston South Carolina, 1838 for free men of color (mulatto or mixed race). The group served the community by providing burial aid, purchasing plots and assisting during funerals, for those in need. Edward Lawrence was born in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1858. He graduated from Avery Normal Institute in 1875. He taught at the Avery Normal Institute for almost 20 years and served as interim principal, as well as serving as president of the Avery Alumni Association.
