Collection Overview

The collection contains correspondence between John Asbury Zeigler, Jr. (1912-2015) and Julius (1904-1945) and Frances Butwin (1911-1996). The letters discuss literary interests, political activism, daily life, and the writings of all three individuals. Included with the letters are drafts of short stories and poems authored by Zeigler.

Biographical Note

John Asbury Zeigler, Jr. (1912-2015) was a South Carolina writer, philanthropist, and activist. He founded the Citadel's literary magazine "The Shako." He opened the independent bookstore The Book Basement in Charleston after WWII with his longtime partner, Edwin Peacock. The bookstore became part of the literary, art, and intellectual scene in Charleston. Zeigler is the author of "Alaska and beyond: selected poems" and "The Edwin poems."

Julius Butwin (1904-1945) was born in Belarus to Jewish parents who shortly after immigrated to the United States. and Frances Mazo (1911-1996) was born in Poland to Jewish parents. She immigrated with her parents and two siblings to Charleston, South Carolina in 1922. Frances submitted an essay to a writing contest for college students in 1930. Julius Butwin sent her a letter after reading the essay, which launched a prolific correspondence between the pair. Two years later, they married. Julius and Frances were both writers and activists. They collaborated on translating the writings of Jewish authors into English.
