Collection Overview

The largest portion of the collection consists of photographs, primarily of the Weinberg family, in particular Flora Moses Weinberg and two of her children, Jacob Albert Weinberg Jr. and Rosalie Virginia Weinberg. Photographs include a small number of images featuring other members of the Weinberg and Moses families such as Perry Moses, Rosalie Virginia Levy Moses, and Benedict and Fannie Weinberg. Letters from Andrew Jackson Moses, his son Perry Moses, and Perry's son Perry Moses Jr. to various relations range in subject matter from updates on daily life, to travel, to the health of family members, visits to family and friends, and well wishes on special occasions. The collection also contains clippings relating to Perry Moses's Civil War service, as well as the obituaries of members of the Moses and Weinberg families.

Biographical Note

Jacob Albert Weinberg (1879-1952) was born to Rosa Levi (1855-1923) and Aaron Weinberg (1841-1919). In 1908 he married Flora Moses (1880-1948), daughter of Rosalie Virginia Levy (1845-1930) and Perry Moses (1844-1916). Flora's father, Perry Moses left the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1861 to join the Confederate Army and served throughout the war. He was the son of Octavia Harby and Andrew Jackson Moses of Sumter, South Carolina.

Flora and Jacob Weinberg had three children, Jacob Albert Weinberg Jr. (1909-1989), Rosalie Virginia Weinberg (1912-1990), and Harold P. Weinberg (1915-1977). The family settled in Manning, South Carolina, where Jacob Albert Weinberg had grown up. Jacob Albert Weinberg Jr. served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy and married Mary Jane Westheimer in 1936. The couple had two daughters, Carol Ann Weinberg (1940- ) and Wendy Weinberg (1945- ). They divorced in 1951, and in 1954 Jacob married Doris Guhring. Jacob and Doris had two daughters, Barbara Louise Weinberg (1956- ) and Susan Beth Weinberg (1957- ). Rosalie Virginia Weinberg married Robert Steele Middlemas in 1939. Harold P. Weinberg served as 1st lieutenant in the U.S. Army during World War II, and married Thais Joyce Johnson in 1944. The couple divorced in 1955.

Photographs, letters, and clippings relating to the Weinberg and Moses families of Manning, South Carolina. The majority of the collection consists of photographs, primarily of the Weinberg family, in particular Flora Moses Weinberg and two of her children, Jacob Albert Weinberg Jr. and Rosalie Virginia Weinberg, and also includes a number of images featuring other members of the extended family. It also contains letters from Andrew Jackson Moses, Perry Moses, and Perry Moses Jr. to various relations, clippings relating to Perry Moses, a Civil War veteran, obituaries, and other materials related to the Moses family.
