Biographical Note

Samuel Breibart (1893-1981) was born to Zlate Friedman and Beryl Breitbard in Russia. He immigrated to the United States in 1906 or 1907 and settled in New York City, where he began working as a tailor. Samuel married Ida Goldberg (1895-1975) on December 20, 1913, and the couple moved to Charleston, South Carolina, in November 1914, shortly before Ida gave birth to her first child. Sam and Ida had five children: Solomon Breibart (1914-2009), George Breibart (1917-2014), Mildred "Mickey" Breibart Sonenshine (1923- ), Sidney Breibart (1928- ) and Jack Breibart (1931- ). After graduation, Breibart taught at the High School of Charleston before moving to Rivers High School in 1957, where he became assistant principal. After retiring from teaching in 1976, Breibart began researching topics relating to Charleston's Jewish history, particularly Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim (KKBE). Breibart gave talks and lectures on his findings and published numerous articles in KKBE's bulletin, the Charleston Jewish Journal, and newsletters of the Southern Jewish Historical Society (SJHS) and the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina (JHSSC).

George Breibart attended Charleston High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was awarded a Bronze Star. He worked for many years in the family grocery store on Meeting Street. The only daughter of the family, Mickey Breibart married Irving "Itchy" Sonenshine (1921-2013) in 1946 and the couple settled in Charleston. Sidney Breibart graduated from the College of Charleston and went on to attend medical school at Duke University, becoming a pediatrician and settling in Atlanta, Georgia. Jack Breibart graduated from the College of Charleston and went on to get a master's degree from the University North Carolina.
