The collection concerns Inez Richardson, members of the Richardson family, and their involvement in Charleston area organizations. Series one consists of the correspondences of the Richardson family, which are largely letters written within the family, as well as financial correspondence of the Rose of Sharon Tent. Series two consists of the papers relevant to the Rose of Sharon Tent, the Charleston Democratic Party, and Avery High School memorabilia.

This collection was created and donated by Mary S. Miller and features records which she collected during her tenure on the Avery Institute for African American History and Culture administrative board. Although she held leadership roles on the AIAAHC board, much of this collection pertains to Miller's personal historical interests regarding Charleston and the Lowcountry.

This series includes both professional and personal correspondence related to James E. Campbell. Personal correspondence includes letters to Betty Shabazz and letters from the Malcolm X Commemoration Committee. Professional correspondence relates to Campbell's tenure as chair of the Education Committee for the Charleston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) as well as state coordinator of the South Carolina Algebra Project.

Correspondence it details Brown’s work within the civil rights movement as leader of the local and state chapters of the NAACP. Other correspondence covers Brown’s involvement with COBRA and other related subjects, including non-Civil Rights related correspondence detailing work with other community minded groups.

The collection includes certificates, awards, photographs, and other documents related to Ethyl Brown's professional and social activities as well as her family. Certificates include a 1945 teaching certificate by South Carolina State Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners. There are also several photographs by Walter Boags, an African American photographer from Charleston, South Carolina.
