The Avery Normal Institute was established by the American Missionary Association (AMA) in Charleston, South Carolina in 1865. The Institute originally served as a school for former slaves and free persons of color, providing normal (or, teacher) training to students pursuing careers in education. William Craft (1824-1900) and Ellen Smith Craft (1826-1891) were slaves who met on a plantation in Macon, Georgia. Unwilling to raise children in slavery, in December 1848 they devised a plan to escape to Philadephia, Pennsylvania. Gracie B. Dobbins (1905-2001) was an African American school teacher. She was born Gracie Lee Burns in 1905 and graduated Avery Institute in 1924 with a teaching certificate. She later married a Mr. Dobbins and taught at Minnie Hughes Elementary School on Yonges Island and possibly elsewhere.
