Abstract The Friendly Moralist Society was a benevolent society, established in Charleston South Carolina, 1838 for free men of color (mulatto or mixed race). The group served the community by providing burial aid, purchasing plots and assisting during funerals, for those in need. Abstract The Friendly Union Society was formed in Charleston in 1813. It consisted of a membership of no more than fifty men and no less than five. It was formed for the relief of orphans and widows in the community; and to provide for the general welfare of the community as a whole.
