Abstract
The Friendly Union Society was formed in Charleston in 1813. It consisted of a membership of no more than fifty men and no less than five. It was formed for the relief of orphans and widows in the community; and to provide for the general welfare of the community as a whole. It also served as a burial society; providing a place for interment, as well as tending and upkeep of the cemetery. This society remained in Charleston in varying degrees of activity through 1981.
