Edwina Augusta Harleston Whitlock was born Gussie Louise Harleston on September 28, 1916 in Charleston, South Carolina to Robert Othello Harleston and his wife, Marie Isabelle Forrest. She was raised by her uncle, Edwin Augustus Teddy Harleston and his wife Elise Forrest after it was discovered that Whitlock's parents had tuberculosis.
