Biographical Note

Joseph Mann was born in 1845 in Lubeck, Germany. His family immigrated to the United States and settled in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. After the end of the Civil War, Mann moved to Laurens, South Carolina, and worked in the general store of his uncle, Louis Mann. He married Amelia "Melia" Robinson in 1877 and moved to Newberry, South Carolina, where he operated a general merchandise store until he retired in Spartanburg in the mid-1920s. According to the donor, when Mann died in the 1930s, the Newberry newspaper ran an article about his life and "affectionately referred to him as 'Jew' Mann."
